Help & Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers about Smellitzer® systems and technology.

What is Smellitzer®?

Smellitzer® is a UK-registered trademark representing a professional range of advanced scent atomization and aroma diffusion systems developed and owned by Phoenix Digital Solutions Limited.

The name was inspired by the classic Wurlitzer jukebox concept — press a button and an experience begins. In the same way, a Smellitzer® device releases a precisely selected fragrance on demand. Unlike generic aroma devices, Smellitzer® systems are engineered to deliver controlled, programmable scent experiences for both commercial and residential environments.

Smellitzer® technology is widely used in:

  • Retail scent marketing
  • Hotels and hospitality
  • Offices and reception areas
  • Property staging and show homes
  • Gyms, wellness and spa environments
  • Events and exhibitions
  • Premium residential spaces
How does Smellitzer® work?

Smellitzer® systems use cold-air atomization technology, the same professional diffusion method used in high-end scent marketing installations worldwide.

Inside each unit, a precision micro-pump feeds aroma oil into an atomization chamber where pressurised air converts the oil into microscopic dry particles. These particles are then dispersed evenly into the surrounding air or into an HVAC airflow.

Because the process uses no heat and no water, the fragrance remains chemically intact and true to its original scent profile.

Key advantages:

  • Longer airborne suspension
  • Even distribution across larger areas
  • No burnt or altered smell
  • No additional humidity
  • Ultra-efficient oil usage
What is atomization?

Atomization is the process of breaking a liquid into extremely fine airborne particles. In Smellitzer® systems, concentrated aroma oil is transformed into a dry nano-mist composed of microscopic scent particles.

These particles behave more like a gas than a traditional spray, allowing them to travel further, stay suspended longer and disperse more evenly, without leaving visible droplets or wetness on surfaces.

Is Smellitzer® safe?

Yes. Smellitzer® systems are engineered for safe operation in commercial and residential environments. They operate without open flames, combustion, aerosols, heating elements or pressurised propellants.

When used with approved aroma oils and installed according to guidelines, Smellitzer® technology is suitable for continuous operation in occupied spaces.

Does Smellitzer® leave residue?

No. When correctly installed and configured, Smellitzer® systems produce an ultra-dry diffusion that does not leave oily deposits on furniture, flooring, electronics or fabrics.

The microscopic particle size promotes evaporation and even dispersion rather than settling onto surfaces.

Can Smellitzer® connect to HVAC systems?

Yes. Selected Smellitzer® models support HVAC integration, allowing scent to be distributed through existing air conditioning or ventilation systems for complete building coverage.

HVAC scenting is ideal for hotels, shopping centres, offices, casinos, airports and large retail spaces where consistent scent intensity is desired across multiple rooms or floors.

How long does aroma oil last?

Oil consumption depends on room size, diffusion intensity, schedule, HVAC airflow and the selected fragrance. Because cold-air atomization is highly efficient, Smellitzer® systems typically use significantly less oil than heated diffusers or aerosol-based systems.

Many commercial installations can operate for weeks or even months on a single refill when correctly configured.

What environments are suitable for Smellitzer®?

Smellitzer® systems are designed for a wide range of indoor environments, including:

  • Retail and branded spaces
  • Hotels and hospitality venues
  • Offices and corporate buildings
  • Gyms, fitness studios and spas
  • Medical, wellness and clinic environments
  • Property staging and show homes
  • Entertainment and event venues
  • Residential homes and apartments

Scent can be used to enhance perceived cleanliness, luxury, comfort and brand identity.

Who owns Smellitzer®?

Smellitzer® is owned and supplied by Phoenix Digital Solutions Limited, a UK-based company specialising in professional scent atomization systems.

Do you manufacture the machines?

Smellitzer® systems are built on carefully selected professional aroma diffusion hardware platforms. Each approved device is tested for atomization performance, configured to Smellitzer® standards and supplied under the Smellitzer® trademark.

This approach ensures customers receive proven, industrial-grade technology rather than basic consumer diffusers.

Can I create a custom signature scent?

Yes. Smellitzer® systems support a wide range of professional fragrance oils, including bespoke blends created to match your brand identity.

Signature scenting is widely used to increase brand recognition, improve customer experience, trigger emotional association and encourage repeat visits.

How do I maintain my Smellitzer® machine?

Routine maintenance is straightforward and typically includes:

  • Checking aroma oil levels and refilling as required
  • Periodically inspecting the atomization head and fan for dust or residue
  • Ensuring air pathways remain clear and unobstructed
  • Using only approved fragrance oils

Cleaning the system with Smellitzer cleaning solution:

  • Order the recommended Smellitzer cleaning solution from us.
  • Power off the machine, remove the aroma bottle and decant any remaining oil into a clean temporary container.
  • Add a small amount of cleaner to the bottle, swirl to rinse and discard this rinse.
  • Fill the bottle with enough cleaner for a short cleaning run, fit it back into the diffuser and place the unit in a stable, dry, well-ventilated area (ideally outdoors under cover).
  • Set the diffuser to a high work time with minimal pause between doses, this will run the cleaner through the system for a short period to flush the internal lines and nozzle.
  • When finished, power off the unit, remove and safely dispose of the used cleaner, refill the bottle with your aroma oil and restore your normal timing settings.

Maintenance and cleaning frequency depend on usage intensity, environment and operating hours.

Terminology note – “Smellitzer”, not “Smellitizer”

Some people casually use the word “smellitizer” to describe aroma dispersal devices, but in this context the correct name is Smellitzer®.

The term “Smellitzer” is widely associated with work done by Disney Imagineer Bob McCarthy in the early 1980s, when he helped develop systems to add scent into dark rides to make them more immersive. At the time, Wurlitzer jukeboxes were still a common reference point: you pressed a button and your chosen song played.

By analogy, the aroma hardware was jokingly nicknamed a “Smellitzer” — press a button and you get the fragrance you want to smell, much like choosing a track you want to hear.

This background is included to explain how the word “Smellitzer” entered the vocabulary of themed scenting. Smellitzer® systems supplied by us are not manufactured by, supplied to, or affiliated with Disney or The Walt Disney Company.
